A 35-year-Old woman arrested by the Police on Wednesday 12th April 2023 for assaulting an IBEDC official while carrying out his lawful duty around Olomore area of Abeokuta, Ogun State has been sentenced to three years’ imprisonment by Court 7, Magistrate Court, Isabo Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Information gathered revealed that when the IBEDC officials got to the building, they discovered that the meter of the building was burnt and residents connected the source of supply directly which the team termed Energy Theft. The team decided to disconnect the house from the pole after issuing a disconnection order.
Mr. Silas (the victim) a staff of the Ibadan Electricity distribution company climbed the pole to effect the disconnection and the defendant climbed after Mr. Silas and dragged him down the ladder. Mr. Silas fractured his right leg and he was rushed to the hospital.
At the hearing, the Defendant pleaded guilty to the 4 counts. Thereafter, the facts were stated by the prosecutor and the evidence were also tendered. The court later convicted the Defendant on all counts based on her plea. The Court thereafter sentenced the Defendant as follows:
Count 1- 1-year imprisonment with an option of N10,000.00 fine
Count 2- 1-year imprisonment with an option of N10,000.00 fine
Count 3- 6 months’ imprisonment with an option of N5,000.00 fine
Count 4- 6 months’ imprisonment with an option of N5,000.00 fine
Term to run concurrently.
The Court however added that the option of fine shall not apply unless the Defendant pays compensation in the sum of N1,500,000.00 (One Million Five Hundred Thousand Naira only) to the Complainant. The Defendant was remanded at the state correctional facility.
The regional Head of IBEDC Ogun Region Engr. Abdulrasaq Jimoh, appealed to customers to desist from taking laws into their hands, urging customers to report any erring staff to the appropriate authority for sanctioning. He further urged customers to continually be law abiding and not see the officials of the company as their enemies but trained professionals ready to assist and satisfy customers at all times.
